We recently joined our colleagues in Maiduguri for the NBA Young Lawyers Forum (NBA-YLF), Maiduguri Branch Summit 2026, a timely and impactful gathering convened under the chairmanship of My Lord, the Honourable Chief Judge of Borno State, Hon. Justice Kashim Zannah, OFR. The summit brought together young legal practitioners, judicial leaders, and stakeholders committed to strengthening the capacity and relevance of the next generation of lawyers.
The theme of the summit—“Empowering the Next Generation of Lawyers: Building Competence, Resilience, and Relevance in a Changing Legal Landscape”—captured with precision the realities confronting young lawyers today. Across Nigeria and beyond, early-career practitioners are navigating an increasingly complex professional environment shaped by technological change, evolving client expectations, economic pressures, and shifting societal needs. The discussions at the summit acknowledged these challenges while offering clarity, encouragement, and direction.
A key takeaway from the conversations was the recognition that competence in today’s legal profession goes beyond technical knowledge of the law. While doctrinal expertise remains essential, young lawyers must also cultivate resilience, adaptability, ethical grounding, and a commitment to lifelong learning. The summit reinforced the idea that relevance in modern legal practice requires openness to innovation, interdisciplinary thinking, and the courage to redefine traditional career paths.
