On 17th December 2024, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association – Young Lawyers Forum (NBA-YLF) Governing Council, Timothy Clement, Esq., had the honour of accompanying the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, to the presentation of the Preliminary Report by Yiaga Africa. The event, held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, focused on Yiaga Africa’s findings and observations from the recently concluded 2024 Ghana General Elections.
It will be recalled that the NBA President participated in the election observation mission in Ghana alongside Yiaga Africa. The report presentation provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on the conduct of elections within the African context and to draw lessons for strengthening democratic institutions across the continent.
Key highlights from the report included notable innovations introduced by the Ghanaian Electoral Commission, such as proxy voting and special provisions that enabled security personnel to exercise their voting rights despite the demands of their duties. Additionally, the inclusion of diaspora voting stood out as a progressive step toward broadening electoral participation and inclusivity.
These developments sparked meaningful reflection on how Nigeria’s electoral system can be further strengthened to promote inclusivity, accessibility, and credibility. The session underscored the importance of continuous reform, innovation, and learning within electoral processes to deepen democratic governance.
The engagement served as a timely reminder of the role legal practitioners and institutions must play in supporting reforms that enhance electoral integrity and public confidence in democratic systems.
